Real results. Considered downtime.

Our low downtime CO2 laser protocol is designed by registered nurses who have spent decades in clinical settings. We believe effective skin resurfacing should work around your life — not stop it.

Nouvelle Cosmetics High quality cosmetic treatments

The most studied resurfacing technology in aesthetics — used thoughtfully.

CO2 laser has been the benchmark for skin resurfacing for decades, with an extensive body of peer-reviewed evidence supporting its effectiveness across a wide range of skin concerns.

At Nouvelle Cosmetics, we use fractional CO2 technology — treating thousands of microscopic columns of skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact.

This supports the skin's own regenerative capacity, helping to improve the appearance of texture, tone, fine lines, acne scarring, and enlarged pores.

As registered nurses with backgrounds spanning intensive care, surgical, and specialist clinical environments, we approach every treatment with the same rigour we brought to hospital settings.

We do not recommend any treatment unless the evidence supports it and the timing is right for you.

Who may benefit from CO2 laser resurfacing

Acne Scarring

Atrophic and rolling acne scars respond well to fractional CO2, which helps stimulate collagen remodelling in the scar tissue. A series of lower-density sessions can help improve the appearance of scarring progressively without extended downtime between appointments.

Enlarged Pores & Texture

Skin texture irregularities and visibly enlarged pores are among the most common concerns we treat. Fractional resurfacing helps refine skin surface texture by supporting new collagen and elastin formation at a dermal level.

Fine Lines & Laxity

Periorbital and perioral fine lines, and early skin laxity associated with photoageing, can be addressed with CO2 resurfacing. We assess the depth and distribution of lines to tailor density and energy settings appropriately.

Sun Damage & Pigmentation

Irregular pigmentation, solar lentigines, and diffuse sun damage respond to the ablative and thermal effect of CO2 laser. We assess skin type carefully and may recommend preparatory treatments to optimise outcomes.

Skin Rejuvenation

Clients seeking an overall improvement in skin quality — radiance, evenness, and firmness — who want results beyond what topical skincare can achieve may be well suited to a tailored CO2 protocol.

Surgical & Trauma Scarring

Mature scars from surgery or injury may show improvement in texture and height with fractional CO2 treatment. We assess scar type, age, and skin type before recommending a treatment plan.

The Nouvelle Low Downtime CO2 Protocol

Traditional ablative CO2 treatments have historically required 7–14 days of significant downtime — a barrier that stops many clients from pursuing treatment at all. Our low downtime protocol uses carefully calibrated fractional parameters to deliver meaningful clinical results across a series of sessions, making treatment compatible with working and social commitments.

This is not a diluted approach. It is a clinically considered one. The evidence base increasingly supports fractionated, multi-session protocols as equivalent — and in some parameters, superior — to single high-density treatments for long-term skin remodelling.

The Evidence

Research supports the efficacy of low-density, multi-session fractional CO2 protocols as a clinically sound alternative to single-session, high- density resurfacing. Multiple peer-reviewed studies demonstrate that fractionated treatments delivered across a series of sessions can achieve comparable improvements in skin texture, acne scarring, and overall skin quality, while significantly reducing the severity and duration of downtime, and lowering the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and infection.

01 YOUR Journey Consultation

Every treatment at Nouvelle begins with a comprehensive consultation. We review your skin concerns, medical history, current medications, skin type, and lifestyle. We use this appointment to determine whether CO2 laser is appropriate for you, and if so, which parameters and number of sessions best suit your goals and schedule.

02 Pre-Treatment Preparation

Preparation is a clinical step, not optional. Depending on your skin type and history, we may recommend a preparatory skincare phase using active ingredients, including retinoids and brightening agents, to optimise skin health and reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sun avoidance and SPF use are mandatory in the weeks before treatment.

03 Treatment Day

Topical anaesthetic is applied prior to the procedure. Our registered nurses perform the treatment using precisely calibrated fractional CO₂ settings tailored to your skin type, the area being treated, and your position in the treatment series. Treatment time varies but is typically 30–60 minutes for a full face.

04 Immediate Aftercare & Recovery

Immediately post-treatment the skin will appear red and feel warm, similar to a sunburn. A barrier ointment is applied in clinic and you will be provided with a detailed written aftercare protocol to follow at home. The majority of clients find redness and swelling peaks at 24–48 hours and resolves to a socially manageable level by day 4–5.

05 Follow-Up & Series Planning

We schedule a post-treatment review to assess healing and results. For most concerns, we recommend a series of 3–5 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart. This interval allows for full healing and the commencement of the collagen remodelling cycle before the next treatment is applied.

Aftercare & Downtime

DAY 1–2

Redness & Warmth
Skin feels warm and appears red to pink. Swelling may be present, particularly around the eyes. This is the peak recovery phase. Rest at home is recommended.

DAY 3–4

Micro-crusting
Fine micro-crusting or bronzing of the skin surface may appear. This is a normal part of the healing process. Continue gentle cleansing and moisturisation as instructed.

DAY 5–7

Pink & Clearing
Crusting resolves. Skin takes on a pink, fresh appearance. Most clients are comfortable returning to work or social settings with or without mineral makeup.

DAY 7–14

Settling
Redness continues to fade. Skin feels smoother. Sun protection is critical throughout this phase. Results continue to develop over the following 3–6 months as collagen remodels.

What to do

  • Apply the prescribed barrier ointment as directed. Keep skin continuously moisturised.
  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a non-foaming, fragrance-free cleanser twice daily.
  • Apply broad spectrum SPF 50+ every morning from day 3 onwards, reapplying throughout the day.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase. Keep the head slightly elevated for the first 48 hours to minimise swelling.
  • Stay well hydrated and rest where possible during the first 48 hours.
  • Contact us immediately if you notice any signs of infection or unexpected symptoms.
  • Attend your post-treatment review appointment as scheduled.

What to avoid

  • Do not pick, scratch, or peel any crusting. Allow it to shed naturally.
  • Avoid all active skincare ingredients, including retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C, until the skin is fully healed.
  • No swimming, saunas, steam rooms, or strenuous exercise for a minimum of 7 days.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks. Extended sun avoidance is strongly recommended throughout the series.
  • Do not apply conventional makeup until the skin surface is fully intact. Mineral powder may be used from day 5–7.
  • Avoid waxing, threading, or other facial hair removal for 4 weeks post-treatment.
  • Do not apply any products not recommended by your treating nurse during the healing phase.

Clinical Evidence

What the research tells us about low downtime protocols

DERMATOLOGIC SURGERY · 2024

A multi-session, low-density fractional CO₂ approach was found to produce clinically significant improvements in acne scar appearance with a substantially reduced downtime profile compared to single-session ablative treatments.

Shenhav L, et al. Fractional CO₂ laser resurfacing for acne scars: a multi-session low-density approach.

JOURNAL OF COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY · 2025

Comparative analysis of fractionated versus ablative CO₂ protocols demonstrated that cumulative low-density sessions produced outcomes equivalent to single high-density procedures for photoageing and acne scarring, with a markedly improved side-effect profile.

Levy LL, et al. Comparative outcomes of fractionated versus ablative CO₂ resurfacing protocols. J Cosmet Dermatol.

LASERS IN SURGERY & MEDICINE · 2004

The foundational study establishing fractional photothermolysis demonstrated that microscopic patterns of controlled thermal injury stimulate effective dermal remodelling while sparing surrounding tissue, providing the mechanistic basis for modern fractional CO₂ treatments.

Manstein D, et al. Fractional photothermolysis: a new concept for cutaneous remodelling using microscopic patterns of thermal injury.

CO₂ laser is not appropriate for all clients

CO₂ laser is not appropriate for all clients

Our commitment to safety means we will recommend against treatment when the risk profile is not acceptable. Contraindications include, but are not limited to:

  • Active acne or skin infection in the treatment area
  • Current use of isotretinoin (Roaccutane). A minimum 12-month cessation period is required
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • History of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Recent radiotherapy to the treatment area
  • Fitzpatrick skin types V–VI. Darker skin tones require specialist assessment
  • History of cold sores without prior antiviral prophylaxis
  • Autoimmune conditions or immunosuppressive medications, assessed case by case
  • Recent cosmetic procedures or injectables in the area, timing-dependent
  • Unrealistic expectations or inability to commit to aftercare requirements

This list is not exhaustive. A thorough consultation is required before any treatment is recommended. We will always err on the side of safety.
